Transportation is the moving of people, goods and animals from one place to another. There are several means of transportation like water, cable, space, air, road, rail, and even pipeline. They can be divided into vehicles, operations, and infrastructure. Transportation is vital because it allows there to be trade between people, which is important to develop civilization.

The infrastructure of transportation is made of fixed installations of waterways, railways, canals, airways, pipelines, and roads as well as terminals like bus stations, trucking terminals, airports, refueling depots like fuel stations, railway stations, and even seaports. Terminals are used to interchange cargo and passengers as well as used for maintenance.

You can consider a vehicle on the infrastructure of transportations like aircrafts, spacecraft’s, watercrafts, helicopters, people, trucks, trains, buses, bicycles, and even automobiles.

Operations of transportation are the way that the vehicles are operated and procedures that are set such as legalities, policies, and financing. When it comes to the transportation industry, ownership and operations of the infrastructure can be private or public, depending on the mode and country.

Passenger transportation may be public where an operator will provide scheduled services or it could be private. Freight transportation is very focused on containers although for large volumes of items, bulk transportation is needed. Transportation will always play a very important part in the growth of the economy as well as globalization, but transportation does cause air pollution and it uses up large amounts of land. Although it is mainly subsidized by the government, good transportation planning is vital to restrain urban sprawl and make traffic flow.

The first mode of transportation was actually something that we do on a daily basis, which is walking, running and even swimming. When the world began to domesticate animals, it allowed the human race to really have a new mode of transportation. This meant that transportation was left to powerful creatures, allowed us to haul heavier loads, and riding animals allowed for faster and shorter trips. With the invention of the wheel and sled help to make animal transportation up until the introduction of the motorized vehicle. Then there were water transportation devices like sailed or rowed vessels which date way, way back and it was the only way to transport large amounts of items and even travel long distances before the industrial revolution.

With the Industrial revolution during the 19th century, it allowed a lot of inventions to come out for transportation. The invention of a steam engine with the help of rail transport, made transportation easier as it could transport items or passengers without the use of animals or human muscles. Eventually capacity and speed increased, which allowed manufacturing to be located in various areas. The steam ship invention allowed there to be global transportation and eventually we would have more modern inventions such as the airplane which make transportation easier and much quicker than ever before. Transportation has had a large impact on the land and it does drain a lot of energy from the land, but without it our civilization would fail.
